How the cross
elicits
such violence
from beyond the reach
of heaven’s peaceful realm
of mercy,
ushering the Christ
into the shedding
of innocent blood —
His blood —
from without
heaven’s gate.
Where an exodus
beyond the threshold
of divine protection
finds the scurrying
of feet
moving in haste,
in abandonment
and denial —
trying to warm
by the fire,
but only
to be exposed
and burned
by the truth.
To deny Him,
as it echoes
in the inner chambers
of thought
and memory.
I may as well
have held
the nails
that were driven in —
how my role
was pivotal
in the barbaric
and brutal act
of atonement,
an inhumane act
in human terms,
but divinely transformative
in the hands
of a holy God,
who can turn
violent, evil means
into the beauty
of divine,
peaceful ends.
To the hope
of glory
that dwells
within me —
being
the embodiment
of Christ
within me —
sent forth
on a mission
of mercy,
filled
with the compassion
of Christ,
and a heart
that beats
for a God
who is holy.
