First and foremost, long life to His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
May he live for a hundred eons — of course, this is every birth of the Dalai Lama: everyone that had existed in the past, to the current, to the one that is to come as well, and the future Dalai Lama to come.
The seat, I very much respect. I hold a high regard toward the seat of the Dalai Lama and the compassion that it embodies, and the wisdom that it embodies. If I’m not mistaken, the words “Dalai Lama” — don’t they mean “Ocean of Wisdom”? So, I mean, for me it couples together an ocean of compassion. There’s a sea of suffering in the world, and the Dalai Lama is like this important drop into the ocean that just ripples out and spreads with compassion and wisdom. Wisdom and compassion are so deeply tied together.
And I know that we can tap into the same wisdom, but we are not really exactly who the Dalai Lama is. His role is important. His seat is important. And, in this context, he is what Catholics look to the Pope in a similar way, right? That’s what I see as someone who was raised Catholic but is part of the Protestant Christian church now. That really doesn’t matter, because even the Dalai Lama — I’ve heard him speak about different religions and laugh about the silly divisions that they cause. I’ve heard his laugh, and it’s infectious. It is an adorable laugh; you will know what I mean. And you laugh with him, but you laugh realizing the truth that he’s speaking, and some of the hurt that we have caused each other through these differences.
So that speaks volumes to me, and it’s a big part of what “Dalai Lama” means — this ocean of wisdom, this ocean of compassion. We could all be parts of that ripple that the Dalai Lama, and his entrance into the world, and being in the world, and his presence being in the world through Avalokiteśvara, and having Green Tara — the embodiments of compassion within this world.
I do truly believe that the seat of the Dalai Lama is important and vital to continue, and it will continue. I believe this with such conviction, even as a practicing Christian. And these do not contradict one another for me, because one thing that I could see Christ and the Dalai Lama — or the Buddha — agreeing on is the need for compassion in the world. There’s no doubt about that.
